From Idea to SaaS: How a Platform Is Built From Scratch

From the problem and requirements, to architecture, MVP, payments and launch — the complete journey of building a new SaaS platform from scratch, step by step.

SaaS is one of the most demanding — and most interesting — categories of digital products. You're not simply building a website: you're building a product that users pay for again and again, because it serves them every single day. Let's walk through the complete journey, from the first idea to future scaling — the way we approach it when designing and building a new platform from scratch.

1. The idea and the problem

Every successful SaaS starts from a clear problem, not a "nice idea." What task is someone doing today manually, with spreadsheets, or with expensive tools that don't quite fit their needs? If you can't describe it in one sentence, the platform hasn't found its core yet.

2. Defining requirements and user roles

Before any design work begins, the following are mapped out:

  • User roles — who uses the platform and what permissions each one has (e.g. admin, member, guest).
  • Core functions per role — what each user needs to be able to do to complete their work.
  • What the first version will not do — just as important as what it will do.

3. UX/UI

In SaaS, design isn't decoration — it's productivity. A poor dashboard loses users faster than almost any other mistake. We design flows, screens and error states so users can complete their tasks in as few steps as possible.

4. Architecture

The technology decisions made at this stage determine the cost and ease of evolution for years to come:

  • Database structure and data model
  • Authentication and user management
  • Multi-tenancy and data isolation
  • API-first design, so that web, mobile and integrations share the same core

The most expensive mistake in a SaaS product isn't a "cheap" initial build — it's the wrong architecture, which makes every subsequent step more expensive.

5. MVP

The first version isn't the complete idea — it's the smallest version that fully solves the core problem. See a detailed breakdown of how to think about the MVP in MVP: How a Big Digital Idea Gets Started.

6. Development

The core of the platform is built: authentication, key flows, data management, account settings. At the same time, the testing environment grows alongside the product — quality isn't "added" at the end.

7. Payments and subscriptions

In SaaS, the business model is part of the product itself:

  • Plans and billing
  • Trial periods and upgrades
  • Managing invoices, receipts, and plan changes
  • Transaction security and proper handling of personal data

8. Testing and quality assurance

Functional testing, security testing, payment flow checks, performance under load. A platform that earns users' trust is, above all, a platform that doesn't let them down.

9. Launch

A meaningful launch doesn't mean "we deployed the platform." It means monitoring: how early customers actually use the product, where they get stuck, what they ask for. Every observation feeds the next development cycle.

10. Future scaling

A SaaS platform that was designed correctly from the start evolves in clear steps: new features, new integrations, internationalization, mobile apps. Evolution isn't about "rebuilding" — it's about extending a healthy foundation.

"From scratch" isn't a slogan — it's a methodology

The journey from idea to SaaS shows why we insist on building new projects from the ground up: every decision, from the data model to the subscription flow, is made with your platform in mind — not the limitations of an off-the-shelf tool. This way, the product starts on the right foundation and evolves with consistency.
